Historical Sites in Somalia face great threat in the on-going armed conflict
In the last 18 years, looting of the Somali museums has resulted into the loss of many important historical records and artefact that were so far unstudied by scholars. The Somali National Museum has lost its entire collection. The material looted includes historical tablets, scripts, coins, silver artefacts, traditional art and ethnographic collections, and Swahili style material culture. Irreparable Somali heritage is totally gone.
Also Somali colonial heritage has suffered as exemplified by the demolition of the Mogadishu Cathedral.
The historical sites of Somalia face destruction since 1991. Historical Islamic heritage of Mogadishu and its ancient quarters, Shangaani and Hamar wayne, suffered greatly in the on-going civil war.
